1B.1.2 Preferred Name

Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC) current employees and registered students may request a preferred name to be used for records that do not require a legal name.

Employees may submit a request to the Human Resources department. Students may submit the request to the Registrar's Office.

  • Requests for a preferred name change must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the beginning of a semester in which the change is to take effect.
  • Individuals may request a preferred name change only once per academic year.

The preferred name will be used until the requestor rescinds the request in writing. The preferred name may be on records that exist after the student graduates or for an individual who no longer works at the college.

ATCC reserves the right to deny a requested preferred name if the requested name is inappropriate. In the event a preferred name request is denied, a written appeal may be submitted. Employee appeals are submitted to the President, and student appeals are submitted to the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. The appeal decision is the final decision at the college.
