Randy Meyer loves to reminisce about his time at Alexandria Technical & Community College (ATCC). He chose ATCC because of its reputation, and his first memories of the college are playing cards and ping pong. He also remembers “dress-up Wednesday” which is still in effect today. This career-preparation activity eases students from high school to the professional world, his next step.
When asked what he wishes other people knew about the college, he answered, “ATCC really embraces the culture of excellence and prepares students for success.” He added that ATCC is successful because the faculty and staff do not settle for mediocrity – they strive for excellence. As a student and student-worker, he has witnessed first-hand the genuine concern staff have for helping students.
He and his wife Joan support ATCC through gifts to the ATCC Foundation. “Giving back is important,” Randy said. “My employer relies on machinists, which is another reason it’s important to support the college. Having ATCC here helps manufacturing and other industries in town. The ‘ripple effect’ in the community is huge.”
After earning his Accounting degree at ATCC in 1981, Randy went on to obtain his Bachelor’s degree at Metro State, and Master’s degree in Management at Cardinal Stritch College. He also obtained his CMA (Certified Management Accountant) license.
Randy’s career path took him to the twin cities, where he worked 11 years for Northern Telecom (with phones and computers) before working in electrical fingerprinting for Digital Biometrics. In 2002 he and his family moved back to Alexandria where he started working as an assistant controller at ITW. He has held several positions at ITW, and is currently serving as their Plant Manager.
Randy’s history with ATCC has come full circle. It started when he was a student, and he is currently active with the Accounting program, serving on their Advisory Council. His ties with his alma mater remain close; he is open to meeting up with potential and interested students to share his knowledge.
Randy and his wife Joan live in Alexandria and have two daughters.
