International Student Admissions
If you are not a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or political asylee please follow these steps to apply:
First: Determine if Alexandria Technical & Community College offers a college experience in which you are interested. We offer mainly Associate degrees (AA, AS, AAS) that typically take full time students two years to complete. ATCC does not offer Bachelor's degrees or Master's degrees.

No special admissions requirements. Please complete the online Application for Admission as a new or transfer student.

Apply for your Student Visa
Note: I-20 forms cannot be issued until all admission requirements are met and it has been determined that an applicant can be accepted into a degree-seeking program.
Your local U.S. embassy or consulate will have specific instructions on scheduling your interview after you have applied. Please keep in mind it may take several weeks or months to get an interview. Please refer to Study in the States for information on obtaining your student visa. Visa appointment wait times are available online from the U.S. Department of State.
Documents you will need for your interview:
- Valid passport
- I-20
- Document proof of financial support for at least one year
- Proof of SEVIS or FMJ fee being paid
- Visa application forms (available from U.S. embassy or consulate)
- Any other documents requested by your embassy

After your Application is Accepted and Visa is Awarded
- Submit photocopy of both sides of I-94 document
- Purchase Health Insurance
- Arrange Housing
- Arrange Travel: We suggest flying in to Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) Airport and taking the Groome Transportation Shuttle to Alexandria. Groome will drop you off at Perkins restaurant, approximately 2.5 miles from campus. Please contact us with your date and time of arrival so a college representative can take you to camps or to your apartment.

Proof of English Proficiency
If your education is outside of US education system, you must be able to demonstrate English proficiency within the last 2 years. Copies are not accepted. One of the following may be provided:
TOEFL: A minimum score of 500 on the written exam or 61 on the iBT exam is required.
IELTS: A minimum score of 5.5 is required on the International English Assessment Battery.
Duolingo English Test: Minimum score 90. The Duolingo English Test is an online proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand.
Successful completion of a college-level Composition I or equivalent course from an American college or university.

Proof of Funding
As an international student, you are required to demonstrate you have adequate funding for all expenses that will be incurred in your proposed program of study. Documentation must be accompanied by a bank statement in U.S. Dollars ($ USD) showing deposits and withdrawals.
Financial Certificate
A completed Alexandria College International Student Financial Information Form must be completed and demonstrate you have adequate funding for all of the expenses that will be incurred in your proposed program of study. This form must be in English and include the required signatures and supporting bank statements, affidavits of support or official letters.
The total of sufficient funds must be at least $20,000 for the first year and $22,000 for the second year.
International Student Funding Support
Opportunities are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
International Student Scholarship: Up to $2,000
Up to $2,000 available to all international students to help support your educational expenses and transition to ATCC. Awarded $500 per semester, up to 4 semesters (fall/spring only)
Up to $5,000 On-Campus Work Study
Eligible international students can apply for campus jobs and earn up to $5,000 per academic year. This is a great way for students to gain experience and help in paying for daily needs.

**Textbooks are not included in tuition rates and vary by academic program. Information about book ordering is available on our Bookstore page. Some programs may have additional requirements like laptop leases, tools, or uniforms. Review the tuition information for your program of interest for additional information.
Health Insurance
Health insurance for International students is required by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. This insurance coverage is provided by UnitedHealthcare Student Resources and fees will be added to your student account. Payment can be made on your Eservices or at the Business Office.
If you have a sponsoring government plan, you must show proof of insurance to our Campus PDSO within the first 5 days of enrollment to be considered for an exemption.
This annual health insurance coverage begins August 10, 2026, and goes through August 9, 2027. This is an illness and injury policy and has limited coverage for lab tests and preventative care. A brochure outlining International Student health insurance benefits is available online at www.uhcsr.com. When prompted for a school name, please enter Alexandria Technical College (Minnesota Community & Technical Colleges).
2026-2027 International Student Health Insurance Plan
- The 2026-2027 premium for the International Student Health Insurance plan is estimated at $2956. Rates are subject to regulatory approval and may change.
- If your insurance premium is not paid by July 24, 2026, your fall classes will be dropped.

Create an Account
Create an account online with UnitedHealthcare Student Resources website to access to your ID card and your benefits. When creating your online account, be sure to use your TechID, not your StarID. Please answer the question as to whether you have other insurance each policy year. Claims will not get paid until this is answered every year.
Electronic ID Card
You can access your ID Card via UHCSR My Account: Go to www.uhcsr.com/MyAccount. Once you’ve logged in, click the ID Card button. With the ‘View or Print ID Card’ option, you can open a PDF of your card for printing or displaying. Or you can request a permanent card be mailed to you.
In Person Health Care
Our campus does not have Student Health Services available on campus. Across the street from Campus are two health care facilities, Alomere Health and Sanford Health Clinic. To find a Network provider/clinic go to www.uhcsr.com and enter Alexandria Technical College (Minnesota Community & Technical Colleges).
UnitedHealthcare Global
United Healthcare Global provides immediate access to doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and certain other services when faced with a medical emergency while traveling. To contact them, call 1-877-461-2273 or email assistance@uhcglobal.com (use program ID number found on your insurance card).
Housing
ATCC Foundation Student Housing offers apartment-style units located adjacent to campus. Applications for student housing open on January 1 each year for the upcoming Fall Semester, and are first come, first served.

Academic Requirements
The minimum requirement for admission is graduation from a secondary school or equivalent.

All incoming students are required to take the Accuplacer test, which is a course placement assessment. The test will be taken upon arrival to the college and must be completed before a student may register for courses.
