America's goods move by truck. The transportation industry is the largest industry in the U.S. It employs more people than any other industry. Wages and benefits in the trucking industry vary according to location and responsibility; however, the national average for an experienced over-the-road driver is from $38,000 to $45,000 per year.
Graduates ages 18 to 21 can be employed in intrastate transportation. Those 21 and older may drive intrastate and interstate. The industry’s average salary for experienced drivers is $40,000 per year, while first-year drivers can expect to earn $25,000 - $30,000. Truck driving schools currently cannot educate enough drivers per year to supply the industry’s needs.
