POLICY STATEMENT

In accordance with Minnesota State Board Policy 3.3, Alexandria Technical and Community College has the following Assessment for Course Placement policy that addresses how student knowledge and skills are assessed for course placement decisions.

Students entering Alexandria Technical and Community College shall take the appropriate ACCUPLACER assessment prior to registering for courses with reading, writing, and math placement pre-requisites. Students may be exempt from taking the ACCUPLACER assessment at ATCC based on the following criteria:

  1. documentation of ACCUPLACER scores;
    • test date within five (5) years for courses with reading or writing prerequisites
    • test date within two (2) years for courses with math prerequisites
  2. documentation of ACT/SAT/MCA scores;
    • test date within five (5) years for courses with reading or writing prerequisites
    • test date within five (5) years for courses with math prerequisites
  3. documentation of ACCUPLACER/ACT/SAT/MCA scores & qualifying GPA
    • High school GPA is valid for ten (10) years from last date of HS attendance
    • Homeschool GPA is not considered valid documentation
  4. documentation of Advanced Placement, IB, CLEP, DSST exams with a college-level score in a related area(s);
  5. documentation of completion (D or higher) of equivalent college-level English course for writing exemption, equivalent college-level math course for math exemption, and college-level reading-intensive course for reading exemption from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution;
  6. documentation of completion (C or higher) of an equivalent developmental reading, English, or math course from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution completed within the last five (5) years;
  7. documentation of completion of a degree from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution (for students enrolled in a program that does not have a math requirement);
  8. undeclared or visiting students who wish to take a developmental course;
  9. enrollment exclusively in non-credit courses or programs;
Retest Policy

Students will be allowed one retest per semester and will be charged a $5 retest fee for each portion of the assessment. PSEO students will not be assessed the retest fee.

Appeals Process

Students may appeal the assessment decision through the academic appeals process.

 

The ATCC Testing Center will administer the assessment tests (e.g. ACCUPLACER) or determine if the student has met the assessment requirement in any other way (e.g. ACT scores, MCA scores, multiple measures, etc.). Students who test as not being ready for specific college-level courses will be required to take a designated college preparatory course(s).
